About Us
About Us
NOLA Black Mental Health Matters L3C (NOLABMHM) is a small collective of Black mental health practitioners and stakeholders in the Greater New Orleans area committed to mental health advocacy, education, and access for the cultures of Black New Orleans. Our team includes Chanelle Batiste, Psy.D., Tiffany Augustine, Psy.D., LCP, Chemwapuwa Blackman, Psy.D., Jasmine Merlette, M.A., Phyllis Jackson, LPC, and Danielle Burton, LPC. Since our inception in 2019, NOLABMHM has launched culturally-informed outreach initiatives in the community and on social media, which include the first NOLA Black Mental Health Matters Virtual Community Summit (June 2021), meet-ups for Black mental health professionals, monthly live-streamed conversations about mental health topics (Power Hours), and weekly mental health vocabulary posts on their Instagram page to promote mental health literacy. Beginning in February 2022, we began profiling Black mental health professionals from New Orleans and surrounding areas to highlight their work and create a central location for individuals to find Black providers. In addition to our own initiatives, NOLABMHM regularly collaborates with other local organizations to create safe spaces to learn and discuss topics (Wellness Wednesdays and Therapeutic Thursdays at Dream House Lounge from October 2022-November 2024; Therapeutic Thursdays at The New Orleans African American Museum as of April 2025) and has provided supportive services to the community (e.g., psychological first aid for post Hurricane Ida care, providing resources at community events). As a group that is passionate about giving back, we are deeply invested in doing the necessary work to be the change they want to see. We are currently under the fiscal sponsorship of Foundation For Louisiana.
